Astrid Brown on Psychic Mediumship
Author/Writer and Psychic Medium, Astrid Brown shares some of her views and experiences with MysticMag
Which most notable life experiences led you to where you are today?
There are many… I guess they started when I was a small child. I knew I was never alone, I used to play with spirit children. Of course I knew they were different as I saw them in a different way to how most people see people and objects. I saw them as transparent or in fleeting glances but most of all I sensed them. I felt them close and it’s difficult to describe how I heard them – not through my ears or even in my head – but somehow outside my body. As I grew older I learned not to talk about this to school friends or others. This sensing diminished a bit until I was in my early teens but when my grandmother passed it grew strong again and I knew she was watching me and I used to talk to her.
I became interested in tea leaf reading and used to read for friends. I also knew when events would happen and was extremely accurate. This frightened me at first.
I had been interested all through school in art and it was my favorite subject. My art secured me a place at university to study fine art. I wasn’t interested in science at all until my final year at school when I studied biology which I am so glad I did.
Two years passed and I felt I was not on the right path. I dropped art and applied to do nursing. It felt right and the biology proved to be useful. I continued to do readings, especially for work colleagues. For some reason people with problems seemed to gravitate towards me as I was a good listener and they left feeling the better for it.
I got married and fell pregnant soon after. I had a late miscarriage and this sensing increased further. It began to overwhelm me and I couldn’t control it. I knew I was going to lose my baby the day before I did and felt there was a reason for this. On leaving the hospital I told the midwives I would be back exactly one year from now, and indeed I was, on the birth of my first daughter.
Another two daughters later I began studying complementary therapies beginning with homeopathy, then aromatherapy (when it wasn’t fashionable), reflexology and crystal healing and many more. I couldn’t get enough and I felt I was on the right path and that I was doing what I was meant to do.
One day just after we had moved to a new house I saw whom I believed to be my husband looking out of the window in the dining room looking at our new garden. I walked around the other side of the dining table to look out of the window too, he stepped back. I began to talk to him and I could see him in my peripheral vision. He wasn’t replying to me, he was just smiling. I turned to face him. I saw him so clearly and that image has stayed with me ever since. He looked like my husband but he wasn’t wearing glasses, looked younger as if he was in his teens and his hair was a bit longer. He smiled at me and then just disappeared in front of me. At that point my husband called me from a different room and was definitely not wearing the same clothes as the young man I had been talking to.
Strange phenomena began happening at home in the days that followed. Lights would come on by themselves and flash on and off. The radio would come on by itself and light bulbs would repeatedly blow. I had an electrician test the wiring and he couldn’t find anything wrong and at this stage my three daughters were scared.
I had to find out about the apparition I had been conversing with as all this phenomena began just after. So I made an appointment with a medium for a reading. She told me the young man was my miscarriage and that he had grown up in spirit and was raised by my (dead) grandmother who had given him the name George. She told me he was so pure in spirit he didn’t need to incarnate on earth and he had chosen me to be his mother as he wanted to experience being in the womb. It was now time to use my gifts and this was why he had come forward. After that day, the phenomena died down and it no longer seemed frightening.
I decided to visit the college of parapsychology and join a healing circle. We had to pair up to practice spiritual healing. The rest of the group were experienced in spiritual healing. I was a complete novice and had no clue what I was doing. I copied what the others were doing all the time thinking this wasn’t for me. However my partner gave me the most amazing feedback and told me my energy was so powerful so I continued to attend, eventually training in spiritual healing. Concurrently I joined a psychic development circle and developed my mediumship. This enabled me to gain control of my abilities which were totally out of control. I couldn’t stop Spirit messaging me at all times of day until that point.
All this was happening while I carried on with my studies in complementary therapies and qualified as a therapist. I further trained in Reiki and became a Reiki Master. I had an idea that if I trained as a beauty therapist I could then eventually offer complementary therapies at a salon which I did and I became very sought after (not so much for the beauty therapy but for the complementary therapy). I was so passionate about my work and I wanted people to know the benefits of these therapies and how they worked to heal the soul.
Around this time I saw an advertisement for voluntary aromatherapists to work within the palliative care department within a large teaching hospital. The patients weren’t just receiving aromatherapy but spiritual healing too. I wasn’t doing this intentionally, I couldn’t help it. As soon as I touched someone they felt the energy. I wanted to pass on my knowledge and spread the word so I went into teaching.
I became a college lecturer teaching anatomy and physiology, beauty therapy, massage, aromatherapy, reflexology and a host of others I had qualified in, eventually becoming Head of Holistic Therapies. I even developed new courses. It was then I began writing, obviously at first course work and then I started channeling spirit writing. I was still working within the college of parapsychology and training and leading a development group myself.
I began writing poetry, much of which I channeled from spirit or from my own soul. I was doing platform readings at their services within the college of psychology, and personal readings for clients during this time and began doing phone and chat readings for a number of international psychic companies. I started writing psychic development books as a result of always being asked the same questions over and over again. It was easier to refer people to the books rather than repeat myself.
I guess this is a long winded way of saying that no experience in life is ever wasted – the good and the bad are all part of our soul’s journey. My whole life made sense, the creative, the nursing, the teaching, the writing all came together to make me the person I am today. Never think any part of your life is wasted. You’ve experienced an important lesson. Only when you look back over your life will you see how every part comes together and fits like perfect pieces of a puzzle. If you’re on the wrong path you will be redirected – listen to your own soul (your heart) and it will guide you throughout life.
What services do you offer those who choose to work with you?
I am not doing readings at the moment but I hope people will read my books and it will bring them comfort. There’s more to life than just earth and every experience contributes towards your individual spiritual journey. I hope my books will inspire people, bring them hope and that each experience will teach them lessons which will make them stronger.
Do you believe physical beauty stems from well-being and contentment?
Indeed! If your soul is beautiful, showing kindness and empathy for others, it will shine through and radiate to others.
What lessons can we draw from your book A Psychic Affair?
My book is a bit more than a novel. I had endless problems with publishers as it didn’t fit into a typical genre. It was a novel based on real life and psychic phenomena that really happened. I felt I had to explain how this occurred and explain how spiritual mediums work. So it was neither a strictly paranormal genre nor a romantic novel. It doesn’t have a happy ending but there is hope and we all need hope to inspire us and to believe that there is more than just our earthly life, which of course there is.
What are your views on the Laws of Attraction?
They are constantly in action. We gravitate to like minded souls. Attraction is not just physical. We often meet others, some maybe in our lives for a short time and others longer, but each acquaintance or friendship is designed to help our souls develop. We all develop at different rates. Some of us are older souls and some younger. This just means older souls have had more incarnations on earth and each incarnation helps us become more spiritual. Mediums have therefore had many lifetimes. I explain more about Universal law in my book “An Angel’s Feather”.
How would you define your psychic abilities and soul purpose?
I’m a psychic medium, an empath and healer who wishes to help others understand the meaning of life. Life is not fair and it’s not meant to be. We incarnate on earth to experience challenges – challenges we have set ourselves before we are born in order to teach ourselves and help develop our soul.
