I am a great believer in Karma, but just what is it? Karma comes from the Sanskrit and ancient Indian Language with the underlying principal that every deed in our lives will affect our future life. For example, if we treat others badly during our lifetime we will have negative experiences later on in that lifetime or in future lifetimes. Likewise, if we treat others well we will be rewarded by positive experiences.

STRESS IS AS DAMAGING TO YOUR HEART AS SMOKING FIVE CIGARETTES A DAY

Stress and how it affects us

We need stress for without it we'd have no motivation to do anything. Imagine this scenario: you've suddenly acquired a vast amount of money on the lottery, riches beyond your wildest dreams. So what's the first thing you do? likelihood you give up your job, people often find their jobs as stressful. You've got enough money so you don't need to work. That makes you feel less stressed, or so you think. Of course you buy the big house, the cars, the boat, designer wardrobe and you party. You really think you have it made. There comes a point though when you can have anything you want, you don't have to work for it, there's no sense of achievement, no goal in sight. You don't have to cook or clean what do you do all day? eventually you will run out of ideas and you will become bored, you will have no motivation to do or achieve anything. Stress is a catch 22 situation if you have no motivation, you become depressed and bored, the days are long that equals stress. So a certain amount of stress is necessary to motivate us and stimulate us and give us a reason to be here and a sense of accomplishment this can be seen simply as this:

Stress = Motivation > Stimulation > Accomplishment = Satisfaction

Stress The dictionary definition of stress is: a constraining or impelling force, effort or demand upon physical or mental energy. A stressor is a person or situation that makes you become stressed. We are more likely to suffer stress in society today than that of our ancestors. 70% of all illness to day is now directly attributed to stress. Modern society with all its pressures traffic congestion, over-crowding, noise, fears and general uncertainties about work, mortgages and family life present situation after situation where the state of stress is ever present. Stress is an everyday part of modern life, everyone experiences at sometime or another and everyday stresses are not necessarily harmful. A certain about of stress keeps us motivated and stimulated to make life more enjoyable and interesting. It is the effect of long-term stress that can be positively harmful to our bodies.

When do stress levels become harmful?

The factors that seem to make any situation dangerously stressful are:

• Lack of predictability
• Lack of control
• Lack of outlets for frustration

For when these elements are present even simple situations can become stressful and produce a reaction that is completely out of proportion to the cause. It is not the situation but our reaction to it that creates the stress in our lives. The problem with us humans we have this tendency to dwell on the past and worry about the future and this takes our attention away from the present. Yet it is in the present moment that we have the greatest clarity to deal with any situation. We should enjoy our life in the present for in holding on to the past and holding back the future we create fear and ultimately stress. Growth in our lives is usually preceded by change the problem is handling change can be difficult in the short term and life-changing events such as:

• Bereavement
• Moving House
• Debt
• Ill Health
• Difficult Relationships
• Stressful Work
• Family Problems Have been identified as the most likely to cause negative or harmful stress.
Even positive events such as:
• Marriage
• Pregnancy
• A child starting school or University May cause you stress and can ultimately lead to illness.

Your personality and coping mechanisms will largely determine how you deal with these daily stresses and strains.

WHAT HAPPENS TO US WHEN WE ARE STRESSED?

Well this goes way back to the times when we were developing as humans and in early periods in history. The body's chemistry was designed to protect us with "The fight or flight response". For example man sees a big bear approach what does he do? he either tackles it or he runs off. Nature is very clever and gives us the capacity to do this. However in 2011 we no longer have the bears, wolves, etc. (ok some of you may) like of yesteryear we have different stresses. Your work colleagues or your neighbours may annoy you but you can't fight them, nor can you run away, but you can learn to deal and dissipate your stress levels so that it doesn't impinge on your health.

But firstly we need to deal with the science bit for if we understand the physiology of stress we're half way there to solving the impact stress has on our lives.

THE SCIENCE BIT

Deep within the brain we have an area known as the Hypothalamus (1), its the home of our moods and emotions and a very primitive part of the brain. The Hypothalamus is also the area that maintains equilibrium in our bodies and it maintains and regulates every bit of our body's chemistry. It is the area that controls the Endocrine system, it forms part of the Autonomic Nervous System and part of the Limbic System. It is Hypothalmus  that is the key to managing stress and all its detrimental effects on our mind and body. It is directly through this area that the holistic therapy Aromatherapy works and is managed by other holistic therapies.

Since the Hypothalamus is the home of moods and emotions anything that affects these will influence the Hypothalamus, thus will have an effect on the body's equilibrium.

Now if we are stressed and modern stressors are not the same as those stressors we had as we were evolving as humans, they still have the same effect resulting in "the fight or flight response"

(1)The Role of the Hypothalamus

The Hypothalamus is the part of the brain that controls the endocrine system.

The Pituitary gland lies beneath the Hypothalamus  and it is this that controls the other endocrine glands.

The Hypothalamus receives information about the Homeostasis (balance) of the body, this is achieved by two means:

  • The blood circulation i.e. temperature, blood glucose levels and hormone levels
  • The nervous system i.e. The Autonomic Nervous system i.e. the part of the nervous system that regulates automatic functions e.g. breathing, heart rate etc. and mental and emotional states, our feelings: these influence ‘automatic responses’ e.g. ‘The fear, flight response’

The Hypothalamus responds to these changes by:

  • Secreting Hormones (chemical messengers) that regulate hormones to be released by the anterior lobe of the pituitary
  • The hypothalamus also directly releases hormones via the Posterior Lobe of the Pituitary , Vasopressin (ADH) and Oxytocin
  • And by stimulating a nerve response to the ‘Central Nervous System’ (Brain & spinal Cord)

SO WHAT HAPPENS IN THE FIGHT OR FLIGHT RESPONSE?

Moods/emotions affect the hypothalamus, the hypothalamus evokes a reaction on the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland produces Adrenocorticotropic hormone this in turn targets the adrenal glands causing them to secrete Cortisone, Cortisone in turn effects the kidneys causing a rise in blood pressure by causing changes in the amount of salt secreted, this hormone causes the body to retain salt. Now remember the Hypothalamus one of its jobs is to maintain the body's equilibrium, it detects a rise in salt levels in the blood so to keep balance it causes the body to retain fluid, it is this retained fluid that increases blood pressure. At the same time, the Hypothalamus being part of the Central Nervous System evokes what is known as the Sympathetic Nervous System this diverts blood away from the digestive system and to lesser important body structures such as the skin and concentrates the blood to the heart, lungs and muscles. Simultaneously this nervous response influences the adrenal glands to produce Adrenalin and Noradrenalin, it is these hormones that induces vasoconstriction (reduces the blood supply) to the skin and peripheral tissues, thus also raising blood pressure.

Now this is putting it simply there are a few other processes also going on to increase blood sugar to give the body fuel to either run off or fight, Corticotrophic hormones influence the pancreas to secrete glucagon this has the opposite effect as insulin.

When the stress is over the Parasympathetic Nervous reverses the process again it is the Hyptholamus that instigates this.

Obviously its much more complex than this and I have focused on a few key hormones as it the action of these hormones that affects our well-being, the ageing process and blood pressure.

The fight or flight response was not designed to last forever it was meant ti instigate an action to deal with an aggressor, be it a wild animal or in a fight with an attacker therein lies the problem modern stressors tends to be work, work colleagues etc. the stress becomes long acting, this kind of reaction is fine in the short term but very detrimental to the body in the long term.

Take Cortisone, it has a damaging effect on specialised cells within the dermis (the skin), fibroblasts, these cells produce collagen and elastin, it is collagen and elastin that gives our skin elasticity and support. Adrenalin reduces blood supply to the peripheral tissues, such as the skin and hair, therefore, these structures do not receive adequate nourishment from the blood. So the effect of long term stress affects the skin resulting in ageing of the skin

Being stressed is as damaging for your heart as smoking five cigarettes a day

  • People who reported feeling stressed were 27 per cent more likely to suffer a heart attack
  • Stress raises blood pressure and levels of 'bad' cholesterol
  • Researchers liken the effect to smoking five cigarettes a day - and the effect gets worse as we age

Are you stressed? If so, your chances of heading to an early grave are significantly higher.
New research has found that people who reported feeling anxious and overwhelmed were 27 per cent more likely to suffer a heart attack.
The study, led by Columbia University Medical Centre researchers, was published in the American Journal of Cardiology.
American researchers found people who reported feeling stressed were 27 per cent more likely to suffer a heart attack
American researchers found people who reported feeling stressed were 27 per cent more likely to suffer a heart attack
The researchers looked at six previous studies where people had been asked about their perceived stress with questions such as ‘how stressed do you feel?’ and ‘how often are you stressed?’.
The groups were separated into high and low stress scores and then followed for 14 years to track the number of heart attacks .

Those who were the most stressed were 27 per cent more likely to have a heart attack.
The effect of stress was so profound that the researchers compared it to smoking more five cigarettes a day.
It was also likened to a 2.8mmol/l increase in LDL cholesterol and a 2.7/1.4 mmHg increase in blood pressure.
The British Heart Foundation says that people who are at high risk of, or already have, heart disease should aim for an LDL cholesterol level under 2 mmol/l.
Stress has also been found to increase levels of 'bad' cholesterol and blood pressure, which are risk factors for heart disease
Stress has also been found to increase levels of 'bad' cholesterol and blood pressure, which are risk factors for heart disease
Therefore, it says the figures suggest a 2.8mmol/l rise is more than double the recommended cholesterol levels for heart and stroke patients.
A healthy blood pressure reading should be below 140/90mmHg.
LDL cholesterol is considered a risk for heart disease that can lead to heart attack because it contributes for narrowing of the arteries that supply blood flow to the heart from plaque buildup, or atherosclerosis.
Higher blood pressure puts stress on the heart and contributes to stiffening of the arteries, making them more susceptible to blockage. It is  thought to be responsible for 50 per cent of all heart attacks and strokes.
The researchers did further analysis to try to learn what might unpin the link between stress and heart disease. They found that while gender was not a significant factor, age was.
Among older people, the relationship between stress and CHD was stronger, suggesting the effects of stress compound over time.
They also noted that older people tend to have worse risk factors such as high blood pressure and raised cholesterol to begin with, and that stress may interact with those risk factors to trigger a heart attack.
‘These findings are significant because they are applicable to nearly everyone,’ said study author Safiya Richardson.
‘The key takeaway (message) is that how people feel is important for their heart health, so anything they can do to reduce stress may improve their heart health in the future.’
Her co-author, Donald Edmondson, assistant professor of behavioural medicine at CUMC added:  ‘This is the most precise estimate of that relationship, and it gives credence to the widely held belief that general stress is related to heart health.’
Heart disease is Britain’s biggest killer. Around 270,000 people in the UK suffer a heart attack every year and and nearly one in three die before they reach hospital.

RESEARCH HAS SHOWN ENERGY DRINKS ARE NO MORE EFFECTIVE THAN A CUP OF COFFEE

These high energy drinks should never be given to children, for one they contain a lot of sugar and have high acidity levels so bad for their teeth but it's bad enough making children hyper with sugar they do not need stimulants. Research is now showing the stimulant qualities of these drinks is down to the high amounts of caffeine.

Article from the Daily Mail below.

Forget energy drinks - they're no more effective than a cup of coffee

  • 'Overwhelming lack of evidence' that ingredients such as guaranaenhance physical or cognitive performance
  • New research suggests only useful ingredient is a generous dose of caffeine

New research suggests it is simply caffeine, rather than added ingredients such as guarana or taurine, that make energy drinks effective
New research suggests it is simply caffeine, rather than added ingredients such as guarana or taurine, that make energy drinks effective
With buzz-word ingredients such as guarana and ginseng, energy drinks have been heralded for their mind and body-boosting qualities.
But according to new research, the only useful ingredient in beverages such as Redbull is caffeine.
The study, published in the Nutrition Reviews journal, found that while energy drinks often contain ingredients such as taurine, guarana and ginseng, there is an ‘overwhelming lack of evidence to substantiate claims that these ingredients boost performance’.
It has been suggested that these drinks enhance physical and cognitive performance.
But the new research casts doubt over this, suggesting the main benefit is probably down to a generous dose of caffeine.
Energy drinks often contain taurine, guarana, ginseng, glucuronolactone, B-vitamins, and other compounds.
The researchers went through dozens of articles that examined the effects of energy ingredients alone and/or in combination with caffeine.

With the exception of some weak evidence for glucose and guarana extract, there was little evidence substantiating claims that components of energy drinks, other than caffeine, contribute to the enhancement of physical or cognitive performance.
Earlier this year, a study found that energy drinks have up to 14 times more caffeine than other soft drinks.
Furthermore, doctors warned that children given energy drinks could pile on the pounds because they are not active enough to burn off the extra calories.
Research published earlier this year warned children should never be given energy drinks, only fruit juice, milk and water
Research published earlier this year warned children should never be given energy drinks, only fruit juice, milk and water
They say energy drinks – which contain between 10 and 270 calories a serving – should never be given to children.

Instead they should be offered water to quench their thirst, and drink the recommended daily amount of fruit juice and low-fat milk with meals.
A hidden problem with energy drinks is caffeine, which can reach toxic levels up to 14 times greater than in other soft drinks. The stimulant has been linked to seizures, diabetes, heart problems and behavioural disorders.
Children’s doctors renewed warnings about energy drinks, and the potential harm from sports drinks, following an expert report by members of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Committee on Nutrition.
Dr Holly Benjamin, a lead author of the report, and a doctor at the Comer Children’s Hospital, part of the University of Chicago, said: ‘For most children engaging in routine physical activity, plain water is best.’
MailOnline has approached Red Bull for comment.

NEW ANTI-DEPRESSANT EASES SYMPTOMS IN JUST OVER AN HOUR

The reason I have posted this article, for as well as new and interesting research, it serves to prove yet again mental illness such as depression is as much a physical ailment, as other conditions where there is an imbalance such as thyroid disease  or any other imbalance leading to illness. It's not so long ago incidentally women were often sent to mental asylums for thyroidtoxicosis, as this condition causes severe anxiety. It's now routine blood tests will be conducted for severe anxiety to rule out an over active thyroid, an under active thyroid often produces, amongst its symptoms depression. Important note however this new drug is NOT ketamine.

Ground-breaking anti-depressant eases symptoms in just over an HOUR

  • Drug worked within an hour and 20 minutes - current anti-depressants take weeks to have an impact
  • It works in a similar way to the Class C drug ketamine but without causing serious side-effects
  • However, the effects may be short-lived

An experimental drug has been found to lift depression in just over an hour in people who haven't responded to other treatments.
The findings open up the prospect of developing a new fast-working type of anti-depressant.
In a new study, a third of participants responded to the treatment within one hour and 20 minutes, seeing at least a 50 per cent reduction in their symptoms compared to a 15 per cent reduction in those who took a placebo.
Living in a fog: Sufferers of depression report feeling emotionally numb
Living in a fog: Sufferers of depression report feeling emotionally numb
This was significant as these patients had failed to improve in seven past antidepressant trials.
However, while their were minimal side-effects the dramatic improvements were short-lived with patients finding relief for an average of just half an hour.
The current range of treatments work through the brain's serotonin system, building up levels of this 'happy' hormone over a period of weeks. This can cause great distress to severely depressed patients as many are at high risk of suicide.

However, the latest drug called AZD6765, acts by preventing the binding of a brain chemical called glutamate to nerve cells.
It acts in a similar way to the Class C drug ketamine, but without the serious side-effects such as hallucinations.
Drug pioneer: Dr Carlos Zarate, who has also reported on the anti-depressive effects of ketamine
Drug pioneer: Dr Carlos Zarate, who has also studied anti-depressive effects of ketamine
Scientists at the National Institutes of Health, who conducted the study, said this could be because the new drug doesn't block glutamate binding as completely as ketamine.
In the trial half of the 22 patients received the drug through an IV drip, while the other half took a placebo. All of them completed a survey assessing their depressive state immediately after taking the drug and a few days after treatment. The two groups then switched the agent they took and went through the same assessment.
The patients reported only minor side effects, such as dizziness and nausea, when taking AZD6765, which were not significantly different from those experienced with the placebo.
Research leader Dr Carlos Zarate, said: 'Our findings serve as a proof of concept that we can tap into an important component of the glutamate pathway to develop a new generation of safe, rapid-acting practical treatments for depression.'
The team reported their results online in the journal Biological Psychiatry. They now want to do further trials, testing whether repeated infusions a few times per week or higher doses might produce longer-lasting results.

RISKS OF DERMAL FILLERS

No procedure is without risk and it's simply shocking that dermal fillers are not regulated in the UK. It is high time they were I also feel such fillers and Botox should only be administered by a consultant plastic surgeon who is also a member of BAAPS. When I was teaching beauty therapy I recall another tutor had invited a paramedic who did fillers and Botox on the side and I was shocked at his cavalier attitude that it was akin to any other beauty treatment. These are products that are injected into the body and its all too easy to inject into a blood vessel, something I was made aware of as a young nurse being instructed in giving injections and the precautions I should take to prevent accidental injecting into a blood vessel.

I see more and more women and men too resorting to Botox and dermal fillers far too early in their life. With a good skin care regime and precautions of avoiding UVA rays and not smoking and eating a healthy diet, they could save a whole lot of money. I guess they like the quick fix.

STORY BELOW IS FROM THE DAILY MAIL.

How cosmetic fillers can destroy your looks: They can turn skin blue and lumpy, leave you blind, and experts warn they could be a bigger scandal than faulty breast implants

Like most brides-to-be, Mary Catchpole, 41, wanted to look perfect in her wedding photos.
The mother-of-two had already lost 2.5 stone in preparation for her big day last year and thought a simple, non-invasive cosmetic procedure to plump up her face would make her look fresher and more youthful.
But the dermal filler injected into both her cheeks caused a devastating chain of physical reactions. Not only was her wedding ruined, but she has been left with serious nerve damage, blurred vision, insomnia, depression and a £10,000 bill for private medical care.

Like thousands of British women, Mary believed dermal fillers to be a safe and affordable way to improve her looks. The procedure involves injecting a gel substance under the skin which plumps out grooves.
Although dermal fillers were developed to treat deformities, cosmetic surgeons quickly realised they could also enhance people's looks.
Now, fillers are as popular as breast enhancements. Along with Botox, they command a market in non- surgical cosmetic procedures worth £775 million, which is expected to grow by 8.4 per cent in the next year.
Restylane, the most popular filler, has been used in 16 million treatments worldwide since it was launched 16 years ago. Unlike Botox, which reduces wrinkles by paralysing muscles, fillers add volume to skin thinned by ageing,  giving a fuller, more youthful effect. But while Botox is legally regulated, the law treats fillers as harmless.

In the U.S., they're regarded as medicines and only six types are approved for use by professionals - on prescription only. In Britain, there are more than 100 types, which can all be injected without prescription by anyone, anywhere - whether they have specialist training or not.
Now a host of problems are emerging. Medical evidence shows they can cause health issues including blindness, facial collapse, herpes, rheumatic disease and blue-tinged flesh.

SURGERY

Two-thirds of women are so unhappy with their body they would undergo plastic surgery, a survey suggests.
Last month, a survey by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) revealed that in the past year around seven in ten surgeons had seen patients complaining of complications from dermal fillers, and over the past three years the number of problems with some fillers has tripled.
A staggering 98 per cent said fillers should be treated as a medicine.
Mary, who had never had any cosmetic procedures before, had her filler injected early in August last year, a fortnight before her wedding to Christopher, 38.
'Botox didn't appeal to me - I didn't like the idea of having a toxin injected into my face,' she says.
'Dermal fillers sounded safer and more natural, as they're made from hyaluronic acid.'
Fillers can be divided into two main groups; temporary ones made from hyaluronic acid, which is eventually absorbed into the body, and more permanent ones made from other materials that can remain in the body for many years
Fillers can be divided into two main groups; temporary ones made from hyaluronic acid, which is eventually absorbed into the body, and more permanent ones made from other materials that can remain in the body for many years
Hyaluronic acid is found naturally in the human body and many temporary fillers use a synthetic form. Mary chose a reputable clinic near her home in Romford, Essex, and saved £600 for the procedure.
It was when a cosmetic doctor at the Court House Clinic in Brentwood injected filler into her forehead, crow's feet and nose-to-mouth lines that the first hint of trouble emerged.
'While injecting filler around my right eye, I understood he'd hit a vein with the needle and that the area would bruise,' Mary says.

FACT UP TO IT

43,069 cosmetic procedures weer done by The British Association of Plastic Surgeons last year
She wasn't too worried, until she woke that night in agony. 'My face was burning - it felt like someone had thrown acid over it,' she says. 'Over the next 48 hours I also developed flu-like symptoms, vomiting and diarrhoea, felt disorientated and developed redness on my cheeks and neck.'
Horrified, she returned to the clinic where, she says, she was told the problem was probably a very rare allergic inflammatory reaction. She  was given a course of steroids and antibiotics, but the symptoms persisted.
Then, only a week before her £6,000 wedding ceremony, the vision in her right eye became blurred and she rushed to her GP. The doctor suggested it might subside by the time she had completed the course of antibiotics and steroids in five further days.
But nothing improved. 'My longed-for wedding day was overshadowed by the fact I was so ill,' she says. 'The night after, my sister had booked us into a hotel as a gift, but instead my husband had to take me to Chelmsford A&E because I couldn't see properly out of my right eye.'
In November last year, experts reported that a female patient went permanently blind in her left eye after having filler injected because it blocked an artery feeding the eye
In November last year, experts reported that a female patient went permanently blind in her left eye after having filler injected because it blocked an artery feeding the eye
Her GP referred her to a dedicated eye treatment centre at Whipps Cross Hospital in East London. 'The specialist said it was possible that the fillers could have got into my system via my bloodstream,' says Mary.
There followed two stays in hospital and regular visits to the GP because the symptoms got worse.
'The burning sensation to my face was intense, I had constant diarrhoea, felt drowsy all the time and had impaired vision in my right eye,' she says. 'Medics at University College Hospital, London, told me they thought it was all a result of my body trying to expel toxins.'
'They diagnosed facial nerve damage with the likely cause being the dermal fillers since there was no other explanation'
Mary paid to see a neurologist in London in February, who referred her as an NHS patient to the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London, where she spent three-and-a-half weeks having tests.
'They diagnosed facial nerve damage with the likely cause being the dermal fillers since there was no other explanation,' says Mary. The consultant neurologist's opinion was that some of the nerves in Mary's brain were desensitised by the trauma.
To date, Mary has spent almost £10,000 on private medical care. The Court House Clinic refuses to accept any blame. 'Had I been fully warned that these sort of side-effects can occur, there's no way I'd have gone ahead with the fillers,' she says now.
Marie, who had filler injections, said: 'All I'd wanted was a little confidence boost, but ended up with the opposite because I was too embarrassed to go out'
Marie, who had filler injections, said: 'All I'd wanted was a little confidence boost, but ended up with the opposite because I was too embarrassed to go out'
The Court House Clinic, however, believes it highly unlikely they are responsible for what happened to Mary. Dr Patrick Bowler, its medical director, says: 'Our medical directors and independent medical experts agree the patient's clinical symptoms are highly unlikely to be related to her treatment at the clinic.'
But he does call for tighter regulation of fillers and Mary's case has been reported to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
Mary is trying to pursue a legal case against the clinic but such cases can be extremely difficult to judge because there is often no definitive medical evidence either way
The makers of the filler, Juvederm, also deny responsibility, but say: 'As with any medical procedure, there is always a risk of unwanted side-effects. Adverse effects with hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers are normally short-lived  and often relate to the injection procedure.'
Mary is trying to pursue a legal case against the clinic but such cases can be extremely difficult to judge because there is often no definitive medical evidence either way. It is scientifically reasonable to assume some people may have rare and unexpected allergic reactions to fillers through no one's clinical fault.

All dermal fillers, no matter how carefully manufactured and administered, must inevitably carry some risk. 'All dermal fillers can induce serious and potentially long-lasting adverse effects,' says Dr Erin Gilbert, a professor of dermatology at the State University of New York.
Marie Adams, 34, is only too aware of the serious problems that can be caused by cheap injections from practitioners with questionable qualifications. A full-time mum to daughters Alice, 16 months, and Emma, 12, Marie went for the injections in her nose-to-mouth lines and top lip seven months ago.
'All dermal fillers can induce serious and potentially long-lasting adverse effects,' says Dr Erin Gilbert, a professor of dermatology at the State University of New York
'I'd seen other women who'd  had great results,' says Marie, from Essex, whose partner Sean, 36, works in a fitness centre.
Marie booked in to a local beauty salon, where dermal fillers cost £150 a time. The salon assured her the practitioner was a nurse and 'very good', but two days after the injections her face was swollen and her lips lumpy. 'My nose to mouth lines were also uneven and one looked more puffed out than the other,' she says.
A fortnight later, Marie went for a check-up with the woman who administered the injections. But she failed to arrive. 'All I'd wanted was a little confidence boost, but ended up with the opposite because I was too embarrassed to go out,' she says.
Marie paid for Dr Mervyn Patterson, a qualified cosmetic doctor, to use more filler to even out her top lip and nose-to-mouth lines.
Pressure is increasing for tighter regulation so only properly qualified, trained and accredited professionals can administer the treatment and the fillers are properly tested
Pressure is increasing for tighter regulation so only properly qualified, trained and accredited professionals can administer the treatment and the fillers are properly tested
Far more serious complications have been recorded. In November last year, experts reported that a female patient went permanently blind in her left eye after having filler injected because it blocked an artery feeding the eye. Similar cases have also been reported, where injected filler has put pressure on blood vessels feeding the retina, starving it of oxygen, causing visual problems and blindness.
Doctors saw a woman complaining of a swelling on her forehead - the filler she'd had injected in her eyebrows a decade earlier had migrated across her head
Fillers can be divided into two main groups; temporary ones made from hyaluronic acid, which is eventually absorbed into the body, and more permanent ones made from other materials that can remain in the body for many years.
Temporary ones are less dangerous, but with most the effects last between three months and a year. Experts warn that all dermal fillers can induce serious and potentially long-lasting adverse effects.
Permanent filler can shift from its injection site to other parts of the body. Doctors at the University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust described a case earlier this year where a woman was sent to them complaining of a swelling on her forehead.
Doctors discovered that a transparent permanent filler gel she'd had injected between her eyebrows a decade ago had migrated across her head.
Some patients can develop a chronic 'foreign body' reaction where the skin attempts to seal off the filler in a fibrous capsule causing lumps.
Stephen Hamilton, a London-based consultant plastic surgeon, has witnessed disfiguring damage caused by wrongly injected fillers.

'I have seen a 40-year-old woman patient who suddenly lost the skin between her eyebrows because an unqualified person had injected dermal filler into her frown lines, accidentally blocking an artery,' he says.
A less damaging, but still upsetting, result is the Tyndall Effect. It happens when temporary hyaluronic acid fillers, which reflect light on a particular spectrum, are injected too close to the surface of the skin, producing a translucent blue discolouration.
'Every kind of procedure intended to alter your appearance needs careful thinking about - it should not be something you do during lunchtime, or because you are lured by discounts'
Pressure is increasing for tighter regulation so only properly qualified, trained and accredited professionals can administer the treatment and the fillers are properly tested.
In January, Andrew Lansley, then Health Secretary, promised a review of the cosmetics industry and it was launched in August by Sir Bruce Keogh, the medical director of the NHS. The recommendations are expected in March.
'Every kind of procedure intended to alter your appearance needs careful thinking about - it should not be something you do during lunchtime, or because you are lured by discounts,' says Dr Alex Clarke, of Royal Free Hospital's department of  plastic and reconstructive surgery.
Some experts are claiming fillers could cause a healthcare crisis  bigger than the faulty PIP breast implants in 2010.
Yet, sadly for women like Mary and Marie, the call for regulation has come too late.

PSYCHIC QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

PSYCHIC QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

IS IT REALLY POSSIBLE TO FORECAST THE FUTURE AND OTHER QUESTIONS?

I am often asked various questions pertaining to the spirit world and various aspects of the psychic, here are some of them: I will in time feature more questions and answers as this webpage evolves

Q. Is a psychic or medium a fortune teller?
A. It may surprise you to know psychics and mediums are not fortune tellers
Q. Is it possible to forecast the future?
A.Well not 100% and this is because of free will.
Q. What is free will?
A. Free will is YOUR right to decide what you want to do about a situation, it is a choice
Q. How does free will affect a situation?
A. Well before we incarnate as Spirit in a human body, we decide on what experiences and challenges that will benefit our spiritual growth. However we are given the choice (free will) as to whether we go through with the experience or challenge. In effect we are allowed to change or mind.
Q. So are you saying we all know what lies before us?
A. Well in a way we all do. Remember we are 'Spirit' in a human body and your spirit does retain a memory but it is deep in our subconscious. This memory is retained deeply for a reason to help us fulfill our experiences and challenges we ourselves chose. However it is also at this deep level so we are not so aware. If you knew what lay before you would you go through with it? Probably not but we still retain this memory deeply and this reflects in our Aura.
Q. So what is the Aura?
A.The aura is The Aura is an electromagnetic field that surrounds living bodies, this includes people, animals, plants and crystals and is composed of several layers that are constantly moving. The Aura links us to whats known as Universal energy i.e. that is all the knowledge in the Universe past, present and future. It is on this aura that psychics are able to tap into and access your past, whats going on in the present and the possible future and I say possible specifically if your goal or desire is dependent on other people, for remember every person involved in a situation has free will.
